ABOUT WATER ISLAND

Water Island is the fourth and most recent main island in the U.S. Virgin Islands, a United States territory located in the Caribbean Sea. The island lies to the south of Saint Thomas in the Charlotte Amalie harbor. Ferry service runs regularly from Crown Bay, Saint Thomas to Phillips Landing, Water Island; the ferry ride takes about 10 minutes (schedule).

At a little less than 500 acres in size, Water Island is the smallest of the main U.S. Virgin Islands. Water Island is a residential island, with a population of 161 (2000 census) and no significant commercial establishments.

The main attractions are beaches, including Honeymoon Beach, plantation ruins, and Fort Segarra, an underground fort partially constructed by the U.S. during World War II.

Honeymoon Beach

Water Island's most lovely beach is only a five minute walk from the campground. Honeymoon Beach beach is just about as pretty as any Caribbean beach you will find - with crystal clear water, fine white sand, and palm trees.

Various food options are available on the beach (hours of operation vary from off-season to high season).

First, you have Heidi's Honeymoon Grill, offering lunch daily, and open all day on weekends. Heidi’s burgers were rated #1 in the U.S Virgin Islands this year. Every Saturday evening, she serves up a gourmet meal by candlelight on the beach. And on Monday nights she sets up a movie screen right on the beach, and serves popcorn and hotdogs!

Down at the other end of the beach is Joe’s Water Island Beach Bar, where you can pick up the tasty frozen drink of your choice.

On select days and evenings, you can get pizza off the floating stand "Da Pizza Boat".

Despite all this convenience, Honeymoon Beach is still a relaxing, quiet, peaceful place to spend your days basking in the sun, snorkeling in among the rocks nearby, or catching a stunning sunset.

The Covered Pavilion (see pic right) on Honeymoon Beach can be rented for $100/day for weddings and parties (with bands or music), based on availability. Ask us for details.
